I know it won't change anything, but it is still a milestone. Fidel Castro announced his resignation today. He has ruled Cuba my entire life; the sole leader there for 49 years. I hope now that Cuba will make moves to become less isolated, give its people more freedom and access to the rest of the world.
Sadly, your hope, and that of our current administration, will probably be for naught. A country's politics typically do not rest on the shoulders of one individual no matter how powerful that individual may seem. I suspect that Cuba will not change its outlook any time soon.
ReplyDeleteFor a parallel, lets look to China after the death of Mao. Some policies lightened up, but then reverted over fears of too much Westernization. China is a different country than it was under Mao, but it is still not a democracy by any stretch of the imagination, despite pockets of rebellious intellectuals (who typically end up in prison).
I wish Cuba the best, but I suspect their path will not change anytime soon.
